PROJECT OUTLINE
To address the needs of these students, 108 students at participating schools, were referred to a speech pathologist for a language assessment. These students were referred for an assessment of their language skills by their classroom teacher. Teachers were asked to complete a questionnaire prior to the assessment. The questionnaire addressed concerns regarding receptive and expressive language skills within the classroom.
The Clinical Evaluation of Language Fundamentals - Australian (4th Edition) was used to assess the Receptive Language Skills and Expressive Language Skills of the students. The Clinical Evaluation of Language Fundamentals Australia is a standardised language assessment that allows for a student's performance to be measured against average responses for students their age.
Students' articulation was also assessed at single word level and within connected speech. Articulation and phonological errors were reported on.
48 students, identified as having significant communication difficulty were chosen to participate in language support programs to be provided at school by LaSTs, teachers and volunteers. Teachers and volunteers will be trained in the language programs by LaSTs and speech pathologist.
These 48 students will have their communication skills reassessed in Term 4, 2013.
Lower Mountains Schools Speech and Language Development Day is scheduled for the 29th April 2013. This will address this project, the results and findings. Communication and communication disorders and the Clinical Evaluation of Language Fundamentals Australia- 4th ed will also be discussed to educate teachers.
